Tea Frostbite likely to cut Nilgiri tea output P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Nov 17 FROSTBITE is likely to reduce the Nilgiri tea crop in the coming weeks if present weather conditions continue, according to experts and planters. The past week has seen single-digit night temperature, with Wednesday touching six degrees Celsius. "It is early to project the impact of the frostbite on the crop, but already there are indications that the frost can lower output," said a tea scientist. Mr T. Rangaiah, President of the Nilgiris Tea Small Growers Association, told Business Line that some pockets in Udhagamandalam, Kotagiri and Kundha belts have already experienced mild frost. "We reckon that arrivals would be low. Should this weather continue, December would see temperatures drifting to zero degrees or even minus, at least for a few seconds," Mr Rangaiah said. But winter Nilgiri tea is a premium product. "This tea is good in quality and preferred by connoisseurs. Normally this should fetch good price and hence brighten prospects for growers," he said. Besides, the approach of end-season in the North is also favourable for the Nilgiri crop in the coming weeks.
