Support mooted for N-E handicraft exports

DESPITE having a rich heritage of culture and skill in handicrafts, the North Eastern Region (NER) has failed to make a significant dent on the export front. "There is a need for greater focus on details of changing trends in design, pattern and production techniques to remain competitive in the global market," says an Exim Bank study.
The study entitled `Prospects for export of handicrafts from NER of India' has captured the potential and constraints faced by the handicrafts sector. It has recommended strong institutional support to ensure that the artisans take to production of handicraft items as a commercial activity and develop distinguishable value-added products.
The region's rich repository of arts and crafts with unique craftsmanship and utility, the special policy initiatives introduced by the Centre and the innumerable schemes rolled out by State Governments for promoting and developing the handicrafts sector has had no major impact this far. It has, nevertheless, accounted for 80 per cent of the total handicrafts production in the country.
Export, though, is reported to be less than 1 per cent of the country's exports. Among others, the study has noted `supply' as the most important constraint faced by the sector.
