Iranian film director scouting for jt venture partner

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Nov. 17

A WELL-KNOWN Iranian film director wants to co-produce his next movie, Mahboobeh, in a joint venture with Indian filmmakers.

Mr Vahid Nikkhah Azad, who is also Head of Children and Youth Department Farabi Cinema Foundation, told Business Line that the film's script was ready.

The film would be about a 14-15-year-old girl, whose father wants to marry her off to an old man, and how she escapes this fate.

"It can happen anywhere in the world," he said on his talks with Indian filmmakers.

On the state of children's films in Iran, he said there was need for a marriage of artistic and commercial aspects of filmmaking. "It is not correct to divide films on these lines. There should be a combination of these two," he said.

Like elsewhere in the world, children's films in Iran faced the problem of commercial viability. "We make some 10-15 children's films, one-third of them being commercial ones. Smaller budgets don't allow filmmakers to go for big names," he said.

As a result, the films failed to draw crowds. Citing the example of The Squeaking Shoes, an Iranian entry at the 14th International Children's Film Festival, he said the film had tasted commercial success owing to the presence of a popular comedian.

The movie was first made in DVD format with an investment of $15,000 and later converted to the 35-mm format at a cost of $10,000.

Mr Vahid, a regular visitor at Hyderabad's children's film festival over the last three years, was on a different mission this time. He was here to select films, particularly Indian films, for an upcoming film fete in Iran.
