NIFT to be accorded university status

THE Cabinet has given its approval for the introduction of a Bill in the ensuing winter session of Parliament for conferring university status on the Delhi-based National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
A Bill to this effect would be tabled in the coming session of Parliament, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr S. Jaipal Reddy, told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting.
A university status would enable NIFT to award degrees to its student, instead of the diplomas being awarded by the institute at present.
"This is important because we hope to export more garments and strengthen our base in the area of textile," Mr Reddy said, adding this is also aimed at capitalising on removal of quantitative restrictions in the sector.
Mr Reddy said there was an acute need for internationally benchmarking the fashion education in India to take full advantage of the process of opening up of the textile industry in the international markets.
NIFT was set up by the Ministry of Textiles in 1986 as an autonomous society, fully funded and supported by the Government of India.
