Nortel sees potential in SMB segment

NORTEL Networks, a global telecom and communications equipment maker, is bullish on the small and medium size business (SMB) segment in India. Last quarter, it launched Business Communications Manager 50, which is an all-in-one platform for converged voice and data communications for SMBs and has so far roped in 20 customers, according to a company official.

The BCM package is designed to give small businesses (with as few as three staff members) low-cost, advanced communication services.

This includes Internet telephony and online multimedia applications that allow employees to collaborate regardless of location, according to Mr Atul Bhatnagar, Vice-President and General Manager, Enterprise Data Networks, Nortel.

The package provides capabilities such as telephony, voice messaging and unified messaging (handling of voice, fax, and regular text messages as objects in a single mailbox that a user can access either with e-mail or by telephone), Internet Protocol (by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet) networking, Internet access, contact centres with skill-based routing and IP telephony. The BCM package, which consists of various solutions, costs between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 10 lakh. separate solution, he said.

Nortel plans to introduce a series of low cost products in India, according to Mr Bhatnagar.

According to Mr Sanjay Jotshi, Director - Marketing, Nortel, the company plans to double its tier-II channel partners in India to about 200 in the next six to 12 months. .
