Chennai port likely to increase tariff

Raja Simhan T.E.

Some of the port users felt that instead of a tariff increase, there should be a reduction.

Chennai , Nov. 21

THE Chennai Port Trust is likely to increase its tariff by 5-60 per cent for its services, including port dues, general cargo and railways.

The Tariff Authority for Major Ports (TAMP), which fixes tariff for major ports, is to issue a notification on this shortly, industry sources said.

There was a consensus among port users for such an increase, and this was conveyed to the TAMP at a recent meeting.

Port users agreed for a 10 per cent increase in tariff on general cargo; cranage and forklift 20 per cent; berthing and mooring 5 per cent; port dues 5 per cent; salvage and divers 60 per cent; and railways 50 per cent, said industry sources.

However, some of the users felt that instead of an increase, there should be reduction that will help the port attract more cargo.

A senior port trust official at a recent meeting with users also expressed that administration of the port trust would rather have more earnings through increased volumes and efficiency than increased tariff, sources said.
