Internet trends

The article "Call of the online community" (Business Line, November 21) makes for an interesting reading.

Few additional points: Personalisation is indeed catching up, but our research indicates that it is still in its infancy in India and the overseas market.

It will take a while before even leading portals such as Yahoo!, Google and ebay personalise. Blogging, per se, is going through the hype cycle and has a long way to go.

Recently, in New Delhi, four bloggers attended the "First Blogging Conference" organised by a blogger.

Blogging has potential, but how to monetise it is still not clear. Ditto for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds; even in the US the awareness and usage of RSS is at its minimum.

The point is, Internet tools and applications such as personalisation, RSS feeds and blogging are still in their infancy. It will be a little premature to bank on them for a bright future for the Net. Adoption of these tools by the vendors is one thing but monetising them and adapting them in their business/revenues models quite another.
