Letters Urban development
This is with reference to media reports that real estate promoters in Tamil Nadu want the Government to revise upwards the floor space index (FSI) from 1.5 to 2.0. The FSI restriction currently is 1.5. During the recent rains in Chennai, the sewerage system got mixed up with rainwater, flooding many residential areas. Even after the rains let up, many Chennai residents continue to suffer from sewage overflow that is causing many pollution problems. The Chief Minister, who has promised to make Chennai the most beautiful city, has undertaken several development projects such as cleaning up and beautifying open spaces. The Government has also undertaken operations to restore temple tanks and other tanks to conserve water and reduce pollution. We hope that the Government will not yield to pressure in getting the building plans approved by the single window system. Perhaps, the Government should prosecute both the builders as well as clients for flouting the regulations which most honest citizens follow. In the final analysis the metros are the targets of builders and if we do not take steps to curb it, we will not be able to lead a healthy, happy and contented life free of stress and pollution. S. Ramaswami Chennai
