Mumbai , Nov. 21

SAFETY is not one-sided and customers should understand their responsibility, said Mr K.V. Kamath, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Bank.

He was speaking at the third cyber safety week organised by the

Mumbai Police and Nasscom here today to spread awareness about cyber crimes and possible safety measures.

"Customers should be educated and they should try not to get defrauded," Mr Kamath said.

ICICI has 45 per cent of its business taking place from ATMs, he said, and maximum number of frauds in this sector is in the form of password frauds. He said that in most cases family members and friends have misused passwords.

"Credit card frauds have not hit India the way it has hit countries like Malaysia, Taiwan and the West. But some frauds are definitely taking place," he said.

Mr Kamath said that his bank keeps an eye on `phishing' (the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise) and pattern of trade taking place through credit cards to single out the foul cases. "We are pro-active in our way of chasing," he said.

Mr Kiran Karnik, Nasscom President, admitted that cyber crime is very less compared to the developed countries. But they are on the rise, he said. "The cyber criminals are also getting smarter and some do it just for the sake of thrill," he said.

He said Nasscom is interacting with the police in all the States to train them in cyber laws and deal with the cyber crimes. "Cyber cell in the State police is a reflection of growing consciousness," he said.

On asked whether Indian police is trained enough to deal effectively with cyber crime cases, Mr N. Saravade, Director, Cyber Security and Compliance, said, "Metropolitan Police is definitely trained in that and we conduct training for the State police forces."

Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group and Mr A.N, Roy, Mumbai Police Commissioner, also spoke about the increasing instances of cyber crime and the efforts being taken to deal with the crime.
