US Senator hopeful of nuclear power ties with India

New Delhi , Nov. 21

THE US Senator Mr George Allen, in a meeting organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), on Monday said that he was optimistic about the Indo-US agreement on the civil usage of nuclear power.

Mr Allen added that India should put forth a credible programme that clearly separates the civil from the military use of nuclear power.

With regard to the degree of private-public partnership between the two nations, the Senator called for strategic alliances and said that in certain sectors such as infrastructure, FDI from the US could considerably ameliorate the situation and help India to move towards a low tax regime.

Mr Allen added that US is keen on supplying coal technology and nuclear energy for civil use. He also emphasised the fact that there was tremendous scope for Indo-US cooperation in nano technology, microelectronics and alternative sources of energy like photo voltaic cells.

The Indo-American trade has grown by almost 50 per cent as compared to the trade figures last year. The Senator felt that many changes are currently taking place in policy areas including changes in the IPR regime that would provide a momentum to trade and investment.
