Courts/Legal Issues Hearing deferred on plea against seamen's strike Our Bureau
Mumbai , Nov. 22 THE hearing on the writ filed by Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA) against the proposed strike by a section of the seamen, has been adjourned to November 24. The Forward Seamen's Union of India has called for a strike on November 25 demanding restoration of Rs 100 crore loss suffered by Seamen's Provident Fund in securities trading in 2002. The counsel for INSA stated that shipping companies were not in a position to redress the union's grievances. It is for the Government to look into the matter. In fact, INSA had asked the Government to set up a tribunal under Section 150 of the Merchant Shipping Act to settle various demands made by the seamen's union. The hearing of the case has been adjourned as the Government pleader has sought more time to reply to the question on actions taken by the Government.
