Bharti using video surveillance service to sell bandwidth

VIDEO surveillance. Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd believes that this is yet another value-added facility for its broadband service targeted mainly at small and medium enterprises and residences too.

In Tamil Nadu alone, it has got 85 subscribers for this service with cameras in 190 remote locations.

Branded BusinessLive@24x7 for the business users and HomeLive@24x7 for residential subscribers, the company introduced these services about four months ago.

"This is part of the company's strategy to come up with value-added products and services," says Mr Deepak Pande, Chief Operating Officer, Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd, Tamil Nadu.

Almost 75 per cent of the subscribers to this facility from Airtel Broadband Services in Tamil Nadu are from Chennai, with some of the leading sweetmeat shops in the city with multiple sales outlets opting for it, according to him.

Under the service, wireless surveillance cameras (IP camera or a closed-circuit camera with some additional hardware) can be connected at any number of locations through Airtel's broadband network and the pictures continuously monitored from a different location on a computer, either on Airtel's broadband network or through the Internet, if the customer does not have an Airtel connection at this site.

For Airtel, the video surveillance facility is an application to sell bandwidth. (The Bharti group is a 50 per cent owner of a company that operates an undersea cable between Chennai and Singapore, which has 8.4 terabits per second of bandwidth capacity when fully lit up.)

According to Mr Pande, the company hopes to market the facility to working couples who would like to keep an eye on what their children are doing at home. For this, the couples can log on to a specific Web site on their office personal computer and track the children's activities.

Airtel, according to him, has got about 2.50 lakh subscribers for its fixed line service in Tamil Nadu, of which about 85,000 are DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) broadband subscribers. The company has covered Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirupur, Vellore, Pondicherry, Salem, Tiruchi, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Erode, Nagercoil and plans to launch its services in Karaikudi and Virudhunagar shortly. For entering other towns, the company is toying with the idea of going through franchisees, where it will put up a part of the infrastructure and the franchisee the remaining.

Mr Pande said Airtel Broadband was also testing its video conferencing service, which it hoped to roll out shortly.
