RailTel in talks with banks for ATMs at stations

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 25

USING the robust bandwidth it created in the last few years, RailTel has decided to facilitate ATMs (automated teller machines), cyber cafes and call centres at major railway stations.

"We are holding discussions with banks," Mr K.K. Bajpeyee, Managing Director of RailTel Corporation, said.

He hoped that the corporation would get necessary approvals in three-four months. Security, however, was a major concern for banks in setting up ATMs at the railway stations.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said cyber cafes would come up at 82 railway stations. Tenders were opened in this regard.

In Andhra Pradesh, these cafes would come up at Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati.

The corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian Railways, secured the right of way along 62,800 km and OFC assets on its formation.

The corporation had laid OFC for a length of 27,888 km. Of this, 23,800 km had been commissioned.

"We will cover 42,000 km with OFC by 2008," Mr Bajpeyee said.

As the network rolled out, the corporation would bring to market high bandwidth, reliable long distance voice, data and video services across the country.

Mr Bajpeyee said the corporation would create nationwide broadband telecom and multimedia network and to modernise train control operation and safety systems.

The corporation had signed a memorandum of understanding with CRIS (Centre for Railway Information System), the software arm of the Railways.

This would enable the corporation to participate in all IT-related works in addition to broadband and telecom services.
