Cambridge University Press plans to expand online publishing

Chennai , Nov. 26

THE US, China and India are the strategic markets for the Cambridge University Press (CUP), said the CUP Chief Executive, Mr Stephen Bourne.

The Cambridge brand recognition in this part of the world was high and there was a good demand for the academic books and journals published by the CUP. About 5 per cent of its global turnover of £125 million came from India, he said.

In addition to this, the CUP has shifted almost all of its typesetting to India, taking advantage of the lower labour cost and skills available here. The typesetting is done in Bangalore, Delhi, Pune and Pondicherry.

The CUP also plans to expand its online publishing activities. In India, the CUP has collaborated with INFLIBNET for the online versions of the journals.

There was a greater need for thelow-priced editions in this market than in the West, he said.

CUP publishes academic and English Language course books.

He said unlike many countries, India had a strong emphasis on serious university education and there were also a large number of graduates.

English Language products accounted for about 35 per cent of all CUP business. The target was to increase this to about 50 per cent in the next few years.
