Reliance to help set up gas network in AP

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 29

THE Reliance Industries has agreed to work with the Andhra Pradesh Government to put in place a gas grid and city gas networks on common carrier principle basis.

This would mean that the gas producers such as ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) and Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation can also use the pipelines to transport their gas across the State at a tariff fixed by a regulator appointed by Government of India.

This assurance came from Mr Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, during his meeting with the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, here on Tuesday, a Government press release said.

The Chief Minister felt that it is important to encourage as many players as possible to establish gas pipeline networks in order to make transportation of gas cost-competitive.

He asked the Reliance Chairman to complete the entire process of laying gas grid first before the gas was taken out of the State. He also asked Reliance to supply gas to at least 10 cities in the first phase by 2008. Mr Ambani agreed to a proposal from the Government to develop 1,000 acres of wasteland in some districts to showcase most productive farm practices and seeds.

Mr Ambani assured the Chief Minister that it would provide productive seeds and technology free-of-cost to support the Government's plan to develop bio-diesel plantation in 17 lakh acres of wasteland, the press release said.
