Supply Chain Management Icelandic co Samskip to set up food supply chain biz in India Dharini Nagarajan
New Delhi , Nov. 30 SAMSKIP Group, a shipping and logistics company based in Iceland, is planning to set up its food supply chain business in the country. Mr Simon Dwyer, Managing Director, Samskip Group UK, said, "We hope to establish our presence in Asian nations like India, China, South Korea and Vietnam in the next 18 months." He was speaking on the sidelines of the FICCI-organised Foodworld Summit. With a turnover of around $500 million, the Samskip Group specialises in cold chain logistics and handles about a million tonnes of seafood worldwide. Mr Dwyer said that the group is currently looking at setting up offices in the country and would later consider investing in cold storages and other food-related vessels and containers. Expressing a keen interest in adhering to the frozen seafood industry in India, Mr Dwyer said that the company would also like to experiment with supply chain facilities for other agro-products such as fruits, flowers and even poultry. The group is contemplating replicating the supply chain models that it has put into effect in countries such as China where it has already placed cold storage facilities. India has a very exciting and growing food market, Mr Dwyer said. Although the group has "no fixed agenda" for its operations in the country, it would try to get a feel of the domestic food distribution system and accordingly make investments, he added. Furthermore, the group would focus on transporting food products from the vendor to the receiver. Addressing the Foodworld Summit, Mr Dwyer outlined the main responsibilities of the group to supply chains, which include uncovering inefficiencies and engineering and designing solutions. Samskip UK, a subsidiary of the Samskip Group, is a specialist in reefer logistics transport and cold chain supply management.
