Kochi , Nov. 30

COCHIN Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has bagged a major repair order worth Rs 372 crore from ONGC to repair its three rigs.

The work for the three rigs — mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) Sagar Vijay and Sagar Bhushan and the Jack up rig Sagar Kiran — were secured by CSL against stiff international competition.

By undertaking all these projects, CSL has become a part of the country's effort for self-sufficiency in oil production. The works of these rigs are to be completed by January 31, 2007.

A formal kick-off ceremony for commencement of these three projects was held at the yard on Wednesday in the presence of Commodore M. Jitendran, CMD, CSL, Mr U.N. Bose, Director, ONGC, and Mr S.C. Gupta, Executive Director, ONGC. Mr S. Sreekumar, Director (Operations) of the yard and Mr V.N. Girijavallabhan, Chief General Manager, were also present.

The upgradation and repairs for Sagar Kiran is the biggest ever-commercial ship repair order in the history of CSL and in the country.

The work was awarded for an amount of Rs 207 crore, CSL officials said.

The rig is at present deployed for workover jobs. With the proposed upgradation, it will be equipped to undertake exploratory drilling operations, including high tech wells such as horizontal and extended reach drilling (ERD) wells also.

The repairs on the rig will also ensure that operational and safety requirements are met. This will provide ONGC with drilling performance with increased cycle speed resulting in reduction of non-productive time (NPT).

The entire upgradation and repair works are to be completed within a period of nine months commencing from May 6, 2006.

Regarding the work of Sagar Bhushan, the officials said that the rig was placed on CSL by ONGC for an amount of Rs 93 crore.

The project envisages major upgradation jobs such as installation of the top drive drilling system, extension of drilling derrick to accommodate the top drive. Installation of top drive by extending derrick is being done for the first time in the country for a drill ship. The total duration of repairs is 120 days to be commenced on March 8, 2006.

The order for dry dock repairs and upgradation of drill ship Sagar Vijay was placed for an amount of Rs 72 crore. The total duration of repairs is 100 days to be commenced from early December.
