Innovative farming

A. Roy Chowdhury

A grower inspecting his betel plant farm at Hrisyamukh in South Tripura. Nearly 2,000 farmers, traditionally involved in cultivation of betel plant, have been introduced to a new technology-based farming supported by the State Department of Agriculture. The growers have taken up integrated pest management, an organic method of controlling pests. This has led to reduced use of chemical pesticides. A betel farmer earns Rs 40,000-50,000 a year on an average.
