Airlines Maintenance base to be set up in Kerala: Air India Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 30 AIR India will soon set up an aircraft maintenance base in the State, a spokesman for the country's international carrier said here on Wednesday. This comes in the wake of allocation of an 11.5-acre land in Thiruvananthapuram free of cost by the State Government. An additional 3.5 acres will be allotted later, the spokesman added. Air India has thanked the State Government for responding to its request in less than 90 days. The establishment of the Air India Aircraft Maintenance Base at a cost of around Rs 50 crore is expected to have a rub-off effect on the State's economic development. Air India has, in recent years, been aggressively expanding its network and has also been operating direct flights to destinations abroad from different cities of India. The establishment of the proposed base in Thiruvananthapuram will help the airline undertake the maintenance of B737-800 aircraft in Kerala itself, from where most of the flights of Air India Express are being operated. The budget airline, which is at present operating flights with leased aircraft, is in the process of acquiring 18 B737-800s, for which a proposalhas already been cleared by the Public Investment Board. It is now awaiting the Centre's approval, the spokesman said.
