MUMBAI: Lakme and IMG have announced the launch of the Lakme Fashion Week — a five day event that will debut in March 2006 in Mumbai.

At a press conference to announce the event, Mr Anil Chopra, Vice-President, Lakme Lever, said, "Lakme has displayed a long standing and deep rooted commitment towards the development of the beauty and fashion industry in India. However, this year we have decided to part ways with the Fashion Development Council of India (FDCI) due to commercial reasons and have decided to move on."

The inaugural Lakme Fashion week will be held from March 28 to April 1 at the National Council for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.

The event proposes to have 20 fashion shows spread over five-day period. The participating designers will showcase their prêt (ready to wear) and Diffusion lines. Lakme Fashion week will hold shows by these designers and also include exhibition stalls, business seminars and workshops.

Fashion designers will be invited to showcase their collections at the Lakme Fashion week before national and international buyers and media, which will include representatives from the US, European and Asia Pacific markets.
