New Delhi , Dec. 1 THE Punjab Government has earmarked an investment of Rs 10,000 crore for the development of business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) industry in the State. The State would acquire 5,000 acres of land for the purpose. This was stated by Secretary IT, Government of Punjab, Mr Nirmaljeet Singh Kalsi, at a summit on `Domestic BPO: Towards Future Value Addition' organised by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Mr Kalsi said the State has already acquired 200 acres of land to set up facilities to aggressively promote hi-tech industries in areas of BPO and KPO and 1,500 acres would be acquired by the end of March 2006. "The State Government is very keen to encourage hi-tech industries to ensure larger employment opportunities," said Mr Kalsi. Mr Manish Dagar, Chief Financial Officer, Wipro BPO Solutions, said that by 2008, the company would expand its BPO business to $58 billion from the present level of about $25 billion. He demanded that the Department of Telecom should come out with a policy permitting the Indian industry to share the infrastructure facilities already laid out by Government-owned companies such as BSNL and MTNL for their counterparts in the private sector.
