The bamboo growers of South Tripura district are busy transporting their produce through the river Muhuri to a nearby market. The rich and diverse natural bamboo resources in the State boast nearly 13 varieties. According to a state government official, bamboo covers nearly 16,000 sq. km area in the State. It fetches Rs 15-20 crore revenue per annum. Recently, the State has initiated a "Bamboo Mission" to encourage nearly 500 self-help groups who produce rich bamboo handicrafts under Tripura Bamboo and Cane Development Centre (TRIBAC), a non-profit organisation, supported by the Union Ministry of Rural Development, Tripura Government, and the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR). But the State is not able to gain much commercially due to problems in transporting the commodity to the rest of the country.
