Coimbatore , Dec. 2

WHILE industry-academia collaborations had hitherto centred round training programmes, this memorandum of understanding between the Coimbatore-based PSG College of Technology and Cognizant Technology Solutions, a global provider of IT services aims at creation of `Centre of excellence' with a focus on research collaboration.

For Cognizant, this is said to be the first R&D tie-up with any educational institute in India. The company is upbeat about establishing similar relationship with the academia in the days to come.

Mr G. Rangasamy, Managing Trustee, PSG Institutions and Cognizant Technology Solutions CEO, Mr Lakshminarayanan, signed the MoU.

Commenting on the tie-up, Mr Lakshminarayanan simply stated that the seed has been sown for collaborative `advanced research' to pursue newer concepts, solutions and other technology developments. "Such efforts would in the long term benefit our customers, the academia and the industry at large."

The Centre of Excellence is expected to facilitate students in coming up with innovative ideas while orienting the faculty towards research by leveraging on the institute's infrastructure. "The thought has been laid. The people are committed. We cannot set a timeframe on research, but will be happy if some innovation takes place over the next 3 to 5 years," he said.

He however declined to divulge the investment.

According to him, such a centre would enable the student be `industry-ready', by facilitating both - training and education. The company would look at pioneering institutions across the country for such tie-ups.
