Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 5

PHARMA major Wockhardt Ltd has launched a new generation hepatitis A vaccine in collaboration with Zhejiang Pukang Biotechnology Company Ltd of China, the originators of the vaccine.

Hepatitis A is a viral infection affecting the liver and is communicated to human beings through the feco-oral route. The incubation period of the virus is 15 to 45 days.

A consignment of 50,000 vials of the live attenuated vaccine produced from H-2 strain, to be sold under the brand name Biovac A, is being airlifted from China and will be available in Kerala and other cities in the country from Thursday, according to Mr S. Nagaraj, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Wockhardt Ltd.

He told newspersons here on Monday that the vaccine provides long-term protection of 15 years and also offers the convenience of a single dose for both children and adults. It can be administered subcutaneously in the dermatoid region of the arm.

Mr Nagaraj said the response from the doctors had been overwhelming and the first batch of 50,000 vials would last four to five months. The immunogenicity and tolerability of the vaccine were confirmed after clinical trials on 200 children at KEM hospital in Pune.

The international vaccine Zhepu was first developed by Dr Mao, the main inventor of the vaccine, in 1987 and introduced in China in 1992. The co-inventors of the vaccine, Dr Fangcheng Zhuang and Dr Chai ShaoAi, who were also present at the meet, said over 120 million people had been administered the vaccine successfully till date.

Mr Nagaraj said there were no plans to get the technology transferred to manufacture the vaccine in India. The company has been permitted by the Centre to advertise the product and plans are on to create awareness among medical professionals.
