Urban mission

This is with reference to the article `PM launches urban mission' (Business Line, December 4), which certainly is good news. The Bangalore infrastructure controversy attracted the nation's attention. And the recent riots in France also have a lesson for us.

The inhuman conditions in which the poor live in many of our cities' slums may not be very different from the situation in the suburbs of France where the migrant poor live.

So the Rs 1 lakh crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), aimed at the integrated development of urban infrastructure and services with special emphasis on provision of basic services to the urban poor has come not a moment too soon. All steps for implementation should be expedited.

A. Jacob Sahayam
