Core banking: Unions' threat to intensify stir

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 6

A JOINT meeting of the officers' and staff unions of the Kerala Circle of State Bank of India has resolved to intensify the ongoing protests against `avoidable complications' emanating from the implementation of the core banking solution.

Laterally, the unions also propose to raise the demand for the bank to revert to its mass banking moorings, said Mr John Joseph, General Secretary, State Banks' Staff Union (SBSU), and Mr S. Vinayachandran, President, SBI Officers' Association (SBIOA) here.

The clarion call for the union activists will be `Save State Bank, Save customers', they said.

Faulty and hasty implementation of core banking had given rise to customer complaints galore often leading to frayed tempers. Clearing of cheques has been affected repeatedly on a number of occasions.

It was objectionable that the management has refused to pay heed to the Banking Ombudsman's call to `pace out' the implementation of core banking, the unions said.

Mr V. Krishnamurthy, Banking Ombudsman for Kerala and Lakshadweep, has gone on record expressing resentment over the way some banks made haste to implement core banking merely with a view to meeting specified targets.
