Supply Chain Management `Warehouses need modernisation' Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 7 THERE is a need to redefine the roles of warehouses, which constitute nearly 3 per cent of the total supply chain cost. Some of the buildings are old, have poor flooring and lack even the basic equipment. They should have modern equipment and latest technology, and be well networked, said Mr B. Sridhar, Member, Advisory Board, CII Institute of Logistics. Warehouses have only been receiving, storing and despatching products. Occupying an important place in the supply chain, they need to redefine and have synergy with customers. In other words, warehouses should be extended arms of customers, he told Business Line. Inefficient warehouses cause huge losses for instance, 30-35 per cent of foodstuff produced in India goes waste compared to 10 per cent in the US. Competition has thrown up several challenges, and logistics and warehouses have larger roles to play in the demanding business environment, he said. And to address these challenges, the institute will organise a two-day conference on Building Warehousing Competitiveness in Chennai on December 13 and 14. The conference is to propel the manufacturing sector towards the next level of warehousing, reengineering both in processes and technologies, said the institute's Director, Dr N. Chandrasekar. The conference will focus on the emerging trends in warehousing and highlight best practices across the globe. Automation needs to be introduced in a big way in warehouses to improve productivity and turnaround time, he said. The speakers at the conference include Mr L. Ganesh, Vice-Chairman, Rane Group; Mr B. Sridhar, Director, Bengal Tiger Line; Mr Vinod Kamath, Chief (commercial and IT), Marico Ltd; Mr R. Seshadri, Managing Director, Take Solutions; and Mr S. Harinarayanan, Business Head (Packaging Consultancy), ITW India.
