Gender Women employee ratio in SSI sector higher in South G.K. Nair
Kochi , Dec. 7 THE proportion of women employees in the small-scale industrial (SSI) sector in the country was 13.31 per cent in 2004, while it was over 20 per cent in Mizoram, Orissa, Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The total number of women employees in the sector is estimated at 33,17,496 and of this, 57.62 per cent were employed in the SSI units located in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, according to a report of the Institute of Small Enterprises and Development (ISED) here. The participation of women in the SSI sector has been identified in three different roles - owners of enterprises, managers and employees - in the Third Census, Dr P.M. Mathew, Director, ISED, told Business Line. With regard to ownership, an SSI managed by one or more women entrepreneurs in proprietary concerns, or in which she/they individually or jointly have a stake of capital of not less than 51 per cent are called "woman enterprise", he said. The total number of women enterprises in the SSI sector was estimated at 10,63,721 (10.11 per cent). About 13 per cent of them was in the registered SSI sector and the remaining 87 per cent in the unregistered sector. The estimated number of enterprises actually managed by women was 9,95,141 (9.46 per cent). Of them, 11.5 per cent was in the registered SSI sector, and 88.5 per cent in the unregistered sector. The share of units managed by women in terms of employment was 7.14 per cent. The employment generated per Rs One lakh investment in these units was 2.49 per cent. The value of output has increased from Rs 3,57,733 crore to Rs 4,12,450 crore in 2004-05, he said. The export contribution of the SSI sector, he said, was Rs 14,199.56 crore last fiscal.
