Announcements Salakorn India sets up factory to produce tube ice Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 7 ICE has been available only in blocks and cubes till now in the country, but Salakorn (India) has set up a factory in Chennai for Pen Foods, a tube ice manufacturer. The plant will start functioning from December 11. Salakorn India, distributor for tube ice manufacturing plants, is a subsidiary of Salakorn Asia, which has executed and commissioned more than 2,000 tube ice plants in South-East Asia. Salakorn India's factory will produce tube ice made from filtered and UV treated water to improve hygiene. Mr Wong Tze Cheen, Director, Salakorn Asia, said the water passes through sand and carbon filters to remove suspended particles; ultra violet sterilisation is then employed to eliminate pathological impurities. He said the whole process was mechanised, and would not pass through human hands. He said only four people are required to operate the factory at any point in time. Mr S. Chelliah, Executive Director, Salakorn India, and Chief Executive Officer, Pen Foods, said the factory was capable of producing 40 tonnes of ice a day, and the ice is priced at Rs 10 per kg. He expected to recover the investment cost - Rs 3.5 crore - in less than 12 months. He said Salakorn India would build five more 40-tonne capacity factories for Pen Foods by January.
