Arrears issue: Great Eastern staff file writ petition

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata , Dec. 7

THE Great Eastern Hotel Staff and Workers Association has filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court alleging that their dues had not been cleared before the hotel was handed over to Mr Lalit Suri of Bharat Hotels Group on November 30, 2005.

The petition states that it had been agreed upon earlier that all dues of workers — who had been brought under a voluntary retirement scheme — would be cleared by November 30. The State Government had now taken the stand that the workers' dues would be cleared by December 15.

It may be recalled that Great Eastern Hotel was sold to Bharat Hotels for Rs 52 crore. The sale was part of the West Bengal Government's public sector enterprises restructuring programme that has been funded by the Department for International Development of the UK.

The petitioner has prayed that the interests of their members be protected by the court.
