Telecommunications ITI to commence 3G mobile production next year Our Bureau
Bangalore , Dec. 8 WITH the production of 3G mobile equipment expected to commence from next year at its Mankapur and Rae Bareli plants in Uttar Pradesh, the public sector ITI Ltd would put India among the select countries manufacturing the new generation equipment. Set up with Alcatel as its technology partner, the two plants would together have the capacity to produce 10 million lines. The ITI Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Y.K. Pandey, said this at the company's AGM recently. He said the company had already received an order from BSNL for three million lines in West Zone, which is currently under execution. An order for an additional two million lines was expected shortly. Besides, MTNL has also released an order for two million lines. GSM equipment orders form the backbone of the company's revival strategy, he said adding the indigenous mobile equipment manufactured by the company, besides meeting the domestic requirements, would also have export potential, particularly in SAARC and Afro-Asian countries. The Chairman said post-expansion, ITI will have the possibility of producing two million lines for export to Alcatel's projects in Africa. The Government, the Chairman said, had decided to gradually induct more sophisticated technology at all ITI locations to adapt to future market requirements.
