THE Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr R.A. Mashelkar, said that about 40 per cent of the global working population in the next 10 to 15 years would be from India and China.
Inaugurating the China Tech Expo 2005, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre, Dr Mashelkar said: "People today talk of the geography of science and not the history of science. This is due to the focus of science and technology which is now shifting, from the US to India and China."
He said that India and China could become great strategic partners particularly in the sectors of ocean science, space research, biotechnology, IT, nanotechnology and medicine.
The Chinese Vice-Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Wu Zhongze, in his address, said India and China were highly complimentary and there was a favourable environment for further development in areas of trade, economy and science and technology.
He said the trade volume between the two countries last year was around $13.5 billion, nearly 14 times of what it was 10 years ago, and the trade volume was expected to cross $20 billion by 2008.
