Telecommunications Phone subscriber base up 3.79 m in November Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 9 TELEPHONE subscriber base in the country has increased by 3.79 million in November to take the total user base to 120 million. During the first 8 months of the year 2005-2006, around 21.50 million subscribers have been added taking the tele-density to 11 per cent. In the mobile segment, 3.51 million subscribers have been added during November as compared to 2.90 million last month. The additions in mobile user base consist of 2.33 million GSM subscribers and 1.18 million CDMA subscribers. The Association of Unified Service Providers of India (AUSPI), representing the CDMA operators, said, "The growth noticed in November was despite many constraints faced by operators including delays in provision of points of interconnection, lack of spectrum, high taxes and levies, continued payment of Access Deficit Charge and delayed SACFA clearances. We expect subscriber additions in the coming months to be more, if adequate spectrum is released to our members." According to data compiled by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, during the first eight months of current financial year about 2.33 million mobile subscribers have been added, making it a total of 71.46 million mobile subscribers at the end of November. In the fixed telephone segment, a total of 0.28 million subscribers have been added during November , which were predominantly wireless in local loop (fixed). With this the total subscriber base of fixed lines has reached 48.47 million. Broadband connections in the country have crossed 7.50 lakh only as against a target of 3 million fixed in the Broadband Policy-2004.
