Workhardt unveils new Hepatitis A vaccine

PHARMA major Wockhardt Ltd today announced the launch of a new generation Hepatitis A vaccine under the brand name of Biovac A in collaboration with Zhejiang Pukang Biotechnology Company Ltd of China, the originator of the vaccine and among China's foremost vaccines manufacturer.

The company, which hopes to sell 30,000-40,000 vials of the vaccine per month in the domestic market, has also been accorded the responsibility of distributing the vaccine in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam. The vials would be imported from China.

Launching the Biovac A, Mr S. Nagaraj, Vice-President (Sales & Marketing) of Wockhardt, said the company hopes to garner 20-25 per cent of the Indian market for Hepatitis A vaccines. The total domestic market for Hepatitis A vaccines has been valued at Rs 16 crore while the total vaccines market in India has been pegged at Rs 400-450 crore.

Priced at Rs 1,100 plus taxes, Biovac A offers long-term protection against Hepatitis A and offers the convenience of a single dose for both children and adults. The immunogenicity and tolerability of Biovac A has been confirmed in a clinical trial conducted on healthy Indian children at KEM Hospital, Pune.

According to Mr Nagaraj, Workhardt would soon introduce vaccines for rabies and chicken pox, among other diseases.
