Smooth sailing?

This is with reference to the editorial, `Private sailing' (Business Line, December 05). One aspect that needs to be looked into is whether the probability of the latest merger of DP World will attract any provision of the Competition Act, 2002 with particular reference to the possibility of Dubai Port Global becoming a dominant player in the container terminal operations.

It is feared that the said, operator has controlling interests in more than five major or developing container terminals both on the west and east coast.

It may also be relevant to note here that the Maersk's recent acquisition of P&O Nedlloyd had to acquire the Acceptance and Approval of the EU Competition Commission and the FMC of the United States. It must be clarified whether our policy and the current regulatory framework precludes such approvals.
