Kochi tea prices rise on good demand

A GOOD general demand resulted in the spurting of prices of almost all varieties of tea at the Kochi tea auction.

The quantity on offer in dust varieties was 10,56,000 kg. There was a good general demand at fully firm to dearer rates. Internal buyers were active along with the major blenders. Orthodox dust remained firm. As per the figures available with Forbes, Ewart and Figgis (Pvt) Ltd, the best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 62 and Rs 70, medium CTC realised Rs 45-55 and below medium were quoted Rs 35-40.

Highgrown BOPD fetched prices between Rs 80 and Rs 112, while medium BOPD realised Rs 38-43.

Secondaries were quoted at Rs 22-29.

The quantity on offer in the leaf sale was 3,83,000 kg. The highgrowns and medium orthodox brokens were firm on last especially the clean black well made teas, with the interest of shippers to Iraq and CIS.

Fannings of both categories were dearer. The cleaner CTC brokens sold around last levels, whilst the Fannings were fully firm to dearer with export demand.

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded prices between Rs 59 and Rs 68, medium Orthodox realised Rs 45-53. The best CTC leaf fetched prices between Rs 43 and Rs 49 and medium CTC leaf realised Rs 35-38.50.

In the dust category, Kodanaad Cl.BOPD fetched the best prices of Rs 112, followed by Parkside Cl.BOPD by Rs 80.

In the leaf varieties, Chamraj OP realised the best prices of Rs 105 followed by Havukal OP by Rs 101.06.
