Bangalore lures tourists for X-Mas, New Year celebrations

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Dec. 11

CAN Bangalore live down its image of being a stop-over for only global CEOs and VIPs? No effort has been made to so far to make the city a leisure tourists' choice.

However, as Christmas and New Year are falling on week-ends this year, a leading hotel in Bangalore has tried to tap tourists.

Though Goa is the hot favourite during the two festivities, Bangalore, with its global setting and airlines offering direct flights from European capitals, could pitch for the weekend tourists' market, offering attractive packages to both international and domestic tourists.

"It may lack the romantic environs of beaches of Goa, but its pubs and gardens and the `Bangalore Walk' started recently by citizens, would offer visitors an experience of the unexplored charms of the city," said Mr P. K. Mohan Kumar, Area Director, Bangalore and General Manager, The Taj West End.

The hotel, in association with its properties in the city, has worked out a package to celebrate the two festivals in their traditional splendour.

Mr Mohan Kumar, who is also the Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Bangalore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCIC), said BCIC in collaboration with the Government is planning to promote Bangalore as a leisure and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination.

He sought to dispel the notion that it was difficult to get rooms in Bangalore's hotels. With the occupancy rate of 75 to 80 per cent, the city could easily accommodate visitors coming even without prior bookings, he added.

Except on occasions such as the biennial air show or major conferences, the city's hotels would have enough accommodation. On weekends, however, the hotels have plenty of rooms to offer, he said.
