Construction industry needs to use more fly ash: Minister

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec.12

THE entire bulk of around 100 million tonnes (mt) of fly ash produced in the country can find its way into the production of building material, if the construction industry is convinced of the advantages of using fly ash as a raw material, the Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Mr Oscar Fernandes, said here on Monday.

Mr Fernandes was speaking at the inauguration of a two-day national conference on `High Volume Fly Ash Concrete.'

He said, "If people can be convinced that the use of fly ash can reduce the time for making the concrete, provide more solidity and reduce costs, the day is not far off when India would be able to utilise all 100 mt of fly ash produced by it as building material."

Mr Fernandes said that there was a time when fly ash was considered a problem for the environment and no one knew how to dispose it off.

But as the use of fly ash for providing solidity to construction material came to be known, people realised that "it is a clear case of resource material," he said.
