Saying it with carpets

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Dec. 13

WHEN the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Buddhists, visits the State Museum next month he will be given a `Mashad' carpet welcome.

The carpet, made by the craftsmen of the Iranian city of Mashad, was gifted by the Iranian Government on Monday.

Mr Ali Hashemi, Vice-President of Tourism Affairs Department, brought 10 carpets from the city of Mashad when he came here on an official cultural exchange programme.

He gifted eight of them to the museum and one each to Ms N. Rajyalakshmi, Minister for School Education and Archaeology, and Ms J. Kedareswari, Director of Museums and Archaeology.

In return, the Iranian officials got Kalamkari carpets, an equally popular handicraft product from Andhra Pradesh from Ms Rajyalakshmi.

Pleased with the gesture of the Iranian delegation, Ms Kedareswari announced that the carpets would be used during the visit of the Buddhist leader.
