Broadband boasts

The editorial `Casting a wide net' (Business Line, December 14) talks of BSNL's various sops to woo customers. Despite the existence of such attractive offerings there is poor penetration of broadband.

BSNL boasts of its social obligation in networking the rural areas where private players fear to tread. Not a day passes without someone in the IT sector claiming to have bridged the urban-rural divide and extolling the advantages of rural connectivity. Just 25 km from Madurai, where broadband is provided, my hometown is yet to be connected by BSNL's broadband. Is BSNL unabile to extend the connection a mere 25 km? Then, what of its commitment to social and rural obligations?
