THE Annual Plan outlay of West Bengal for the next fiscal year 2006-07 has been fixed at Rs 8,024.36 crore, inclusive of additional Central Plan assistance of Rs 100 crore for priority schemes of the State, at a meeting between the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the State Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, here on Wednesday.
While appreciating the state's performance in agriculture, power and health sector, Mr Ahluwalia assured Central support in developing infrastructure in the State. This is important, he said, for the development of special economic zones and broad basing economic activities. The Plan panel also assured the state full support in setting up a deep-sea port for which feasibility study is already on.
The Plan panel urged the state to go for 100 per cent metering and electrification of households in the power sector and said it should prepare village and district plans and also special component plans as per the guidelines of the central government to ensure balanced regional development.
In his remarks, Mr Bhattacharjee briefed the Commission on the development activities of the state and said the emphasis in the next annual plan would be on social services, besides energy and power, transport, rural development and irrigation and flood control.
He said efforts were on to revive sick state-owned enterprises through the joint venture route and the second phase of restructuring state-owned enterprises would be launched soon. The state also drew attention to the need for focus on secondary education, as the national effort towards universalisation of elementary education would create additional pressure on secondary and higher education.
