WOCKHARDT Ltd plans to become a dominant player in the vaccines segment and introduce about five new vaccines in the country by the first quarter of 2007.

It has initiated talks with pharma firms in China, South Korea and Switzerland for bringing in vaccines for rabies, chickenpox, Japanese encephalitis and so on.

According to Mr S. Nagaraj, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, the company is marketing vaccines for hepatitis B and typhoid and will introduce another one for hepatitis A, which is being procured from Zhejiang Pukang Biotechnology Co of China. The Chinese company is developing vaccines for chickenpox and Japanese encephalitis, which Wockhardt plans to bring to India too.

On the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday, Wockhardt's share price fell by Rs 1.85 or 0.4 per cent, to close at Rs 446.05.
