New Delhi , Dec 14 LONG-TERM partnerships between the Government, civil society and the corporate sector is key for upliftment of the social sector, the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, has said. "We will do well not to forget that the basic responsibility for delivering on social basics is that of the State. You can supplement the role of public agencies, not supplant it," she said at a luncheon meeting of the visiting Board of Directors of the UN Foundation established by the CNN founder, Mr Ted Turner. While acknowledging that several corporate houses have made significant social contributions, Ms Gandhi said that its role is much more than just providing financial resources. "It is a vehicle for mobilising new technology and management and for providing attractive opportunities to young professionals eager to innovate and bring their skills to the social sector," she said, "I want to say to my friends in business that they should not look at social investments as a mere dole or add-on that needs to be done to earn public plaudits," she added asserting that the same should be as much a part of business activity as quality control and research. Besides Mr Turner, Infosys' Chief Mentor, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, and the Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, were among those who attended the meeting.
