New Delhi , Dec. 14

AIR India could move a step closer to acquiring 68 brand new Boeing aircraft soon with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs likely to take a view on the acquisition proposal at its meeting on Thursday.

Official sources said that a clearer picture on whether the proposal will be taken up or not on Thursday will emerge later on Wednesday night after the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, returns from Kuala Lumpur.

"The agenda of the meeting has to be approved by the Prime Minister.

The AI fleet acquisition papers have already been circulated to all the Ministries so it is possible that the proposal is taken up at the meeting on Thursday evening," a senior Government official said. The deal is estimated at around Rs 35,000 crore.

The airline plans to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft for Air India and 18 Boeing 737 aircraft for its low cost 100 per cent subsidiary, Air India Express.
