THE Reserve Bank of India brass on Thursday met the chiefs of regional rural banks to assess their condition, according to Mr V. Leeladhar, Deputy Governor.

The central bank's initiative is said to have assumed significance in the light of recent declarations by the top RBI management with regard to the RRBs.

The RBI Governor, Dr Y.V. Reddy, had already pointed out that banks performing well may be provided with special incentives. The latter may include currency chests and permission to offer foreign exchange services. ATMs may also be part of the deal, he had said.

The discussion with the RRBs was led by Ms Usha Thorat, Deputy Governor, it is learnt.
