BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems recently announced the availability of two Sun Fire servers based on UltraSPARC T1 processor, formerly known as "Niagara".

The Fire T1000 and T2000 run on the eight-core, 9.6 GHz, T1 processor and Solaris 10 operating system. The single-unit Sun Fire T1000 server costs Rs 1.76 lakh, while the two-unit T2000 costs Rs 4.59 lakh.

Sun also announced the OpenSPARC Project to foster participation in processor architecture design. The code of the latest processor, UltraSPARC T1, will be open to developers.
