Mobile gaming sector sees robust growth

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Dec. 16

THE worldwide growth of the mobile gaming market is said to have exceeded expectations. Industry watchers expect the games download revenues to reach the £7-billion mark by 2010, when the mobile handset growth is envisaged at over two billion.

The mobile games sector is dominated by specialist players, unlike the console or PC gaming markets.

In line with the market growth, the mobile gaming sector has doubled in value terms as well over the past year to touch £1.7 billion in revenues.

Studies indicate that Japan and Korea, which have traditionally been the powerhouses of the mobile gaming industry, have been overtaken by Europe and America in revenues from this segment. These two countries are expected to account for more than 50 per cent of the global mobile gaming sector revenues this year.

There appears to be high level of interest on investment in this sector. According to a survey, venture capital investments account for more than £425 million since 1999.

Meanwhile, industry insiders have estimated the worldwide market at £850 million in 2004 and expect it to double in revenue terms this year.
