Courts/Legal Issues Palkhivala Arbitration Centre to be launched on December 21 Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 17 THE Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996 was meant to help settle certain commercial and institutional disputes through arbitrators rather than courts, in order to lessen the burden on the legal system. In an attempt to institutionalise the process of arbitration, the Nani Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC) has been set up, and will be formally inaugurated on December 21. Addressing a press conference, Mr Habibullah Badsha, Senior Advocate, quoted Mr Justice R.C. Lahoti, former Chief Justice of India, saying that the number of pending cases in India has reached massive proportions, with 29,315 cases pending in the Supreme Court, 32,24,144 in high courts, and 2,53,50,370 in subordinate courts. He said the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Mr Justice A. P. Shah, had observed that 8,40,363 cases - of which 4,09,210 are criminal cases - are pending in Tamil Nadu.
