Mumbai , Dec. 17

THE board of Vedanta Resources Plc has approved a $2.1-billion greenfield 5,00,000-tonnes-per-annum aluminium smelter project together with an associated 1,215-MW captive thermal power plant in Jharsuguda, Orissa.

According to an official statement, on completion, the project would increase Vedanta's total aluminium smelting capacity to 9,00,000 tpa, placing it among the largest integrated producers of aluminium worldwide.

The Jharsuguda project will repeat the project framework and technology of the Korba smelter. It will comprise two pot lines, each containing 288 cells and would be implemented in two phases of 2,50,000 tpa each.

Construction is expected to commence in June 2006, the statement said.
