Customs dept sets up help centre at Kakinada

GREATER interaction between taxpayers and the tax collection authorities is required for greater compliance and hassle-free collection, Mr V. Ramu, Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Visakhapatnam - II, has said.

He was speaking here on Saturday evening after inaugurating a help centre in the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He said that during the current financial year, Rs 609 crore had been collected in eight months as Customs duty against the annual target of Rs 709 crore. On the excise front, he said, Kakinada was the major contributor with Rs 218 crore. The Commissionerate had collected Rs 267 crore till November this year besides Rs 23.29 crore as service tax.

He thanked the chamber of commerce for providing space for the help centre. Mr D. Surya Rao, President of the chamber, apprised the Commissioner of the problems of the trade in the region.
